Christian Counseling

What is Christian Counseling in Marietta, GA?

Christian Counseling is using psychotherapy practices with the inclusion of teachings and components found in the Faith. It can include the use of scripture and prayer with clients, if desired by the client, in the achievement of the goals for the therapy.

This involves the holistic person, their beliefs, and values, and meeting the client where they are in their present circumstances. Their understanding of scripture and how the teachings of scripture are applied in daily life speaks to how they are experiencing, coping with, and understanding the trials they are experiencing.

People have different perspectives on spirituality and religion. Spirituality is usually defined as a personal connection with a higher power or energy. Religion is usually referred to as an organized set of beliefs and/or practices within a specific faith practice such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. Knowing the client’s perspective helps the clinician incorporate what the client desires into the counseling sessions. At Foundry Counseling our Christian Counselors offer services that utilize a person’s faith in their mental health healing.

What Christian Counseling is Not

Christian Counseling is not a Bible study, a sermon, or the therapist’s personal beliefs. As counselors, we are not teaching theology unless they are trained to provide this in addition to counseling.

Biblical counseling can be facilitated by a pastor or a clergy member of a person’s faith. In this setting, there is no clinical component to counseling, unless the clergy is clinically trained.

Understanding the Perspective of Your Reality

Much of counseling is helping people understand their perspective of their reality, cope with aspects that are out of their control, and problem-solve aspects they have control over. This is a clinical process that a therapist learns in their graduate schoolwork and must prove to be able to ethically and effectively carry out with clients through a practicum and internship, and then pass a state board exam for clinical licensure.

It is important for the client and therapist to determine if they are a good fit before moving forward with faith-based counseling. This is facilitated in a consultation call prior to starting the therapeutic process.

Diagnoses like psychosis, PTSD, active suicidality, and other needs require a clinical protocol, and Faith-based counseling would not be used until life-threatening circumstances were stabilized and safe.

Religious or Spiritual Abuse

This is a horrible trauma that occurs in some people’s lives and is when there is an attempt to exert power and control over a person(s) using religion. If you have experienced this abuse, you and your counselor will focus on the trauma and how you are experiencing your reality following this experience in your life. When working with this type of trauma, there are specific things that should and should not be done throughout your counseling work. Please let us know at intake if this is something you are wanting to work on so we can match you with the most effective counselor.

How Christian Counseling is used at Foundry Counseling…

We offer Christian Counseling because we have many clients who practice faith and are looking for this to be an active part of their sessions, which can include a prayer with your counselor and actively looking at scripture as it supports you in your counseling goals.

We are all created in God’s image, and while feelings such as grief, depression, anxiety, anger, addiction, and many others, are so hard to experience, we were created with them. God displayed emotion. We are to live our lives as He modeled life for us. We teach that “feelings are indicators and not decision-makers.” We must learn to be mindful of our feelings while asking where they are coming from, and then determine where to go from there.
